Choosing where you’ll get ready on your wedding day matters more than people think. It’s where you’ll spend your quiet moments before the day officially starts. It’s where you’ll step into your dress, have your makeup done, share a few nervous laughs, and maybe even cry a little. It’s also where some of your most intimate and beautiful wedding photos will be taken. Some wedding venues offer a bridal suite or getting ready space for both partners, which makes things super convenient. But if you’re getting married at a church, a courthouse, or a venue that doesn’t include a prep area, you’re probably going to think about getting ready at home, in a hotel room, or at an Airbnb instead. Here's what to think about:

Natural Light is Everything

If you want soft, clean, flattering photos while you’re getting ready, look for a space with large windows and plenty of natural light. Avoid rooms with orange overhead lighting or no windows at all. Natural light not only looks better in photos, but it also helps your makeup artist do their best work.

Photographer tip: I always recommend getting ready in a room with white or neutral-colored walls. Light bounces around better and doesn’t cast weird color tones on your skin or dress.

Think About the Space & Clutter

You’ll have your crew, your dress, makeup, hair tools, food, drinks, shoes, and more all in one space. A larger room or suite gives everyone room to breathe and avoids the look of a cluttered background in your photos.

Look for: hotel suites, Airbnbs, or bridal suites at your venue that feel open and spacious. Bonus if there’s a pretty couch, mirror, or window nook we can use for portraits.

Choose a Location That Fits the Vibe of Your Wedding

If your wedding is elegant and timeless, getting ready in a hotel with old-world charm or a clean, classic Airbnb can set the tone. If your wedding is outdoors and laid-back, a cozy cabin or modern farmhouse might be a better fit. The aesthetic of your getting ready location shows up in your gallery more than you realize.

Tip: If you’re doing flat lays (invites, jewelry, perfume), having a place with nice surfaces like wood tables or textured fabric helps a lot.

Proximity to the Venue Matters

If your getting ready spot is far from the ceremony site, it can add stress and tight timelines. Try to choose a location within 15-20 minutes of your venue, especially if you’re working with a tighter schedule. Fewer things to worry about = more time to enjoy the morning.

Ask About Early Check-In

Hotels often have a 3 or 4 p.m. check-in, which won’t work if you have an early ceremony or afternoon photos. If you’re booking a hotel or Airbnb, ask in advance about early check-in or consider booking it for the night before. That way, everything’s set up and you’re not rushing to get in the room.

Consider Separate Spaces for You and Your Partner

Some couples want to do a first look, and others prefer to stay totally separate until the ceremony. Either way, it’s helpful to have two separate getting ready locations, especially if you don’t want to accidentally see each other. If both spaces are close together, your photographer can bounce back and forth and capture both stories.

Keep the Guest List Low

The more people in the room, the harder it is to move around and stay calm. Try to keep your getting ready space to just the essentials—you, your wedding party, your hair and makeup team, and a few close family members. It keeps things peaceful and easier to photograph.

Make it Personal

Bring your favorite playlist, get some snacks and mimosas, and have a robe or outfit you feel great in. This part of the day should feel special, not chaotic. It’s one of the only quiet moments you’ll have before everything kicks off.
