Planning your wedding day photos shouldn't feel overwhelming! As an experienced wedding photographer in Lincoln, NE, I’ve helped tons of couples capture every special moment without the stress. A well-planned timeline makes all the difference, so here’s a breakdown of how to fit in all those must-have shots while keeping your day relaxed and fun.

1. Groom Getting Ready (30-60 minutes)

Let’s kick things off with the groom and his crew! I like to start my wedding days by heading over to wherever the groom will be getting ready, whether it be at home or a hotel. This is the perfect time to capture:

  • Candid laughs with the groomsmen
  • The final touches (think cufflinks, tie, and jacket buttoning)
  • Any sentimental moments with family or friends

To get the best shots, I usually pick a spot with great natural light or if there are any areas with harsh sunlight coming through, I take advantage of it and capture more moody and dramatic images.

2. Bride Getting Ready (60-90 minutes)

Next up, the bride and her girls! These moments are always filled with excitement (and maybe a few happy tears). Here are some things I focus on:

  • Beautiful dress, shoes, and jewelry details
  • Fun moments with the bridesmaids
  • Emotional first looks with parents

A bright, clutter-free room makes all the difference in getting dreamy, timeless shots!

3. First Look & Group Photos (1-2 hours)

Thinking about a first look? It’s a private, emotional moment that gives you both time to soak it all in before the ceremony. Plus, this section of time allows me to capture:

  • Sweet reactions between you two
  • Stunning couples' portraits
  • Wedding party photos before the ceremony begins

I always recommend a first look and at least an hour of time for all the photos of you and your friends!

4. Ceremony (30-60 minutes)

The big moment! Every ceremony is different but as your photographer, I will be there to document:

  • That exciting walk down the aisle
  • The emotional vows and ring exchange
  • The first kiss (and all the cheers afterward!)

No matter where you're tying the knot—whether it’s a gorgeous chapel or an outdoor garden—every meaningful moment will be captured beautifully.

5. Family Photos (30 minutes)

After the ceremony, it’s time for those must-have family portraits. I always make sure to reserve time for this in the wedding timeline. And to make this part smooth and stress-free:

  • Have a family member list ready so no one gets left out
  • Assign a helper to gather family
  • Choose a shaded, scenic spot for the best lighting

This helps us move quickly and efficiently so you can enjoy more time with your guests!

6. Reception (2-4 hours)

Finally, the hard part is over! The vows have been exchanged, the formal photos are done, and now it's time to relax and celebrate. The reception is where you can truly let loose and enjoy all the hard work you put into planning this day.  Some of the best moments happen at the reception, and I’ll be there to capture:

  • Your grand entrance
  • First dances and parent dances
  • Toasts, cake cutting, and all the fun on the dance floor

With the right lighting and a little planning, I’ll get amazing shots that truly capture the joy of your night.

7. Sunset Photos (20 minutes)

Golden hour = magic! Just after dinner is the perfect time to sneak away for a few romantic sunset photos. These shots:

  • Give you two a quiet moment alone
  • Take advantage of dreamy, golden light
  • Turn into frame-worthy memories you’ll love forever

As your photographer, I can help you plan for this moment to get the absolute best lighting and atmosphere!
