Planning a wedding is exciting, but costs can sneak up on you fast. Even with a solid budget, couples often run into surprise expenses that weren’t part of the original plan. I’ve worked with a lot of couples who didn’t realize just how many small things add up. So let’s talk about the wedding costs no one really tells you about and how to plan ahead.

1. Alterations and Dress Extras

Buying a wedding dress is one thing. Altering it to fit perfectly is another cost entirely. Most bridal shops don’t include alterations in the dress price. On top of that, things like steaming, a custom bustle, or adding straps or lining can cost more than you think.

2. Beauty Trials

Hair and makeup trials are a must if you want to know how you’ll look ahead of time. But those sessions usually aren’t included in your wedding day glam fee. They’re often priced separately, and some artists charge the same amount as they do on the actual day.

3. Vendor Meals

Your vendors (photographers, videographers, DJs, planners) are working long hours. Most contracts require that you provide them a hot meal during dinner. These vendor meals usually cost the same as guest meals, and if you have a team of vendors, that adds up.

4. Service Fees and Gratuities

That $2,000 catering invoice? It might not include the 10% service fee. Many venues and vendors add fees for staffing, clean-up, and admin. Tipping is also often expected for servers, bartenders, and drivers. And while tips aren't always required, they are very appreciated.

5. Delivery and Setup Charges

Florists, rental companies, and cake bakers often charge extra for delivery and setup. If your venue is far or has complicated access (think staircases or no elevator), those fees might be higher. Some rental companies also charge for picking everything up after the reception.

6. Marriage License and Legal Paperwork

The marriage license fee varies by state, but it's something you’ll need to factor in. There might also be a small fee to get certified copies after the wedding. Not a huge cost, but still something people often forget to include.

7. Postage for Invitations

If your wedding invites include multiple cards, RSVP envelopes, or heavy paper stock, postage will cost more. You might also need extra stamps for return RSVP envelopes. Couples often forget to budget for this part, but it can be close to a hundred dollars depending on your guest list.

8. Outfit Accessories and Day-Of Details

Shoes, jewelry, ties, pocket squares, getting-ready robes, special perfume, even socks—these little things don’t seem like much, but they add up fast when you're styling everyone.

9. Overtime Fees

Weddings don’t always run perfectly on time. If your reception runs longer than planned, some vendors will charge overtime. That includes your DJ, venue, photographer, and videographer.

10. Clean-Up and Take-Down Costs

Not all venues include cleanup in their rental fee. Some require you to hire a team or pay extra for them to do it. Same goes for taking down decorations, lighting, or florals.

The best way to avoid surprise wedding costs is to ask specific questions when you book your vendors. Read every contract carefully and ask what’s not included. I always encourage couples to build in a little buffer room in their budget for the things that pop up last minute.
