If you’ve started searching for a wedding photographer, you’ve probably heard the word “style” a hundred times by now. But what does that actually mean and how do you know what style is right for you? As a wedding photographer that shoots weddings in Lincoln and all over Nebraska, I always tell couples: it’s not just about pretty photos. It’s about finding a style that actually fits the way you want your day to feel. Here’s what to look for when figuring out a photographer’s style and how to know when it clicks.

1. Editing Style: Light and Airy? Dark and Moody? True to Color?

Editing is one of the biggest things that defines a photographer’s style. Some photographers edit with warm, golden tones and deep contrast. Others go for that bright, airy look. I personally lean toward true-to-color, clean, timeless edits—I want your photos to feel like your real day, not a preset trend. When you're browsing through portfolios of wedding photographers, take note of how skin tones look, how the colors of the dress or flowers are showing up, and whether it all feels natural to you.

2. Posing Style: Candid, Posed, or a Mix?

Some photographers are all about traditional, posed portraits. Others are hands-off and go full documentary-style. Most of us (me included) fall somewhere in the middle. I like to let moments unfold naturally, but I’m not afraid to step in when it’s helpful, especially during portraits or family photos. If you want photos that feel relaxed and real, look for a photographer whose galleries show real emotion, movement, and connection, not just stiff poses.

3. Consistency Across Galleries

Don’t just look at a few highlight photos. Scroll through full wedding galleries, if you can. A consistent style means your whole day will be photographed and edited in a way that flows together. Ask yourself:

  • Do all the photos feel like they’re from the same wedding?
  • Are both indoor and outdoor shots edited consistently?
  • Can I see myself in these images?

4. The Way the Day is Documented

Style isn’t just how photos look—it’s also about what your photographer captures. Some focus heavily on detail shots and portraits. Others tell more of the story: the little looks, hugs, reactions. I always aim to capture the full experience: the people, the energy, the quiet in-between moments. If that’s what you value too, make sure it shows in the photographer’s galleries.

5. How It Makes You Feel

This might sound simple, but it’s the most important part: when you scroll through a photographer’s work, how do the images actually make you feel?

Do you feel connected to the moments, even though you don’t know the people in them? Do the photos feel joyful, emotional, calm, intimate or however you want your own day to feel? That emotional connection is huge.

Your wedding day is full of real, once-in-a-lifetime moments. If a photographer’s style doesn’t spark something in you now, it probably won’t later either. On the flip side, if you find yourself smiling, tearing up, or getting excited imagining yourself in those photos—that’s the kind of reaction you want.
